Being held since 2003, the Edinburgh Marathon Festival is an annual event held every year in Scotland and is one of the most popular marathons in the UK with over 16000 runners taking part in it. The event, spread over 2 days, is not just a race but a running festival offering a bouquet of races suited to everyone –whatever by their age and running ability. Organized by GSi Events Ltd., the Edinburgh Marathon lends support to a number of charities including the Macmillan Cancer Support, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer Scotland, Stroke Association, and many more.
The Edinburgh Marathon has been sold out every year since 2008 and is the second largest marathon in the UK, behind only London.
The event offers various races ranging from 5K & 10K to longer distance Half Marathon, Marathon, and Marathon Relay. It also has a variety of races for kids.

* All members of the Team Relay must be 17 years of age or older (15 years or older for legs 2 and 4 which are less than 10K) on the event day.

Over the years the route has been modified to accommodate adverse comments about the hilly portions of the race and is now one of the flattest routes aiding fast timings.
In the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, the Full Marathon, Marathon Relay & Half Marathon have a POINT TO POINT course while all other races (10K, 5K, Junior 5K, Junior 2K, Junior 1.5K & Kids Kilometer have an OUT & BACK course with the below mentioned Start and Finish points:

Important Points
- Water is available at aid stations for distances 5K or more. Energy gels are available at limited aid stations.
- Pacers are not available for any of the races.

- Runners are expected to finish within certain time limits: Marathon (6 hrs 30 min), Half Marathon (4 hrs 30 min), 10K (1 hr 30 min), 5K (45 min), 5K Junior (45 min), 2K (30 min), 1.5K (20 min) and Kids Kilo (20 min)
- Other than the standard/general category, entry can be sought under Top Club or Standard Club – details below.
- Top Club: Top club athletes receive complimentary entry and front start pen access for the race start. Available only to British athletes, the athletes need to have run a marathon/ half marathon (as per race applied to) under a certain time limit.
- Good for Age: This is a standard club entry similar to Top Club, the athlete should have run a marathon/ half marathon (as per race applied to) under a certain time limit- unlike a blanket time limit given for Top Club, the ‘Good for Age’ time criterion is an age defined. The standard club entry also guarantees a starting pen near the front of the race.
