The Gold Coast Marathon is an annual road race held in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Inaugurated in 1979, the Gold Coast Marathon is Australia’s only premier road race to hold World Athletics Label status. The event is held in the first week of July and is spread over 2 days. It offers a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K and Junior dashes of 4K and 2K

The men’s course record of 2:07:50 was set by Yuta Shitara in 2019, while Lindsay Flanagan is the women’s course record holder with her run of 2:24:43 in 2022.

The 2020 edition of the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, with all registrants receiving refunds. Four days before the scheduled event, the 2021 edition of the race was cancelled due to a three-day snap lockdown in parts of Queensland, including the Gold Coast.

Points to Note for Prize Purse
– Awards are equal for Male and Female participants
– All prizes/ bonuses are in AUD
– Dead heats: In the event that there is a dead heat for any prize money winning place in any race then the relevant prize money shall be combined and then split equally between the competitors. Sample scenarios:
Example 1. Should two runners dead heat for 1st in the marathon they will each be awarded $11,000.
Example 2: Should three runners dead heat for 1st in the marathon they will each be awarded $8,500.
Example 3: Should two runners dead heat for 3rd in the half marathon they will each be awarded $500

Important Points

  • Qualification Time: Qualification time for Seeded (Elite) and Priority (Sub-Elite) athletes is applicable for Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K run and 5K run
  • Wheelchair participation: Racing wheelchair entrants are welcome to compete in the CPL Wheelchair Marathon and the CPL Wheelchair 10km. Day wheelchairs may compete in any race except for the CPL Wheelchair Marathon and the CPL Wheelchair 10km). Hand cycles are not permitted in any event.
  • Double entries: It is possible for runners to have double entry combinations like below:
    Saturday – Half Marathon, Sunday – Marathon
    Saturday – 5km Fun Run, Sunday – Marathon
    Saturday – Half Marathon, Sunday – 10km Run
    Saturday – Half Marathon, Saturday – 5km Fun Run
    Saturday – 5km Fun Run, Sunday – 10km Run
    Saturday – 4km Junior Dash, Sunday – 10km Run (only available to those aged 12, 13 or 14)
  • Change in race distance: It is possible to change race distance until entries close (entries close at 8:00pm Friday for the Saturday races and at 4:00pm Saturday for the Sunday races). When downgrading your race distance, refunds will not be given. When upgrading race, runner will be required to pay the difference in entry fees.
  • Transfer: Entries can be transferred from one entrant to another. Transfers are only valid for the same year of entry. If downgrading your race distance once transferred, refunds will not be given. If upgrading your race, you will be required to pay the difference in entry fees.
  • Corrals/ Waves: Runners would be released in waves. There are 7 waves/corrals including 2 waves for Elites & Seeded athletes. Corral are assigned based on the qualifying standards and the information submitted during the application process
  • Pacers are available for Marathon & Half Marathon who will pace groups of runners
  • Aid stations: There would be aid stations located along the course providing water and isotonic drinks (Tropical flavour Fuel X from Fixx Nutrition), washroom and medical facilities
  • Personal refreshments will be distributed to refreshment stations for seeded and priority start runners participating in the Gold Coast Marathon only. Personal refreshments will be available at the 5.5km, 10km, 15.5km, 20km, 25.5km, 30.5km, 35.5km and 40.5km refreshment stations.   • Permitted: Only runners, walkers, wheelchairs and prams are permitted in the events where specified below.
  • Not permitted: Animals other than those used by people with disabilities as accredited guide and assistance animals are not permitted to accompany runners or walkers in any race.
  • Prams are only permitted in the Gold Coast Airport 5km Fun Run and must start at the back of the field.
  • Parental accompaniment:
    – A parent/guardian is permitted to accompany a child for free in the Health and Wellbeing Queensland 2km Junior Dash only. Parents are not permitted to accompany runners in the Health and Wellbeing Queensland 4km Junior Dash.
    – A parent/guardian is required to accompany any child under 11 years of age registered in the Gold Coast Airport 5km Fun Run. If a parent/guardian is registered for another event they will be able to gain access to the course to complete the Gold Coast Airport 5km Fun Run with their child at no additional cost.
  • Time limit applicable on the course for after which the course is thrown open to normal traffic
    – Full Marathon –6 hrs 40 min
    – Wheelchair Marathon – 6 hrs 45 min
      – Half Marathon- 3 hrs 20 min
    – 10K- 1 hr 40 min
    – Wheelchair 10K- 1 hrs 45 min
    – 5K- 1 hrs 10 min
    – Junior dash 4km – 40 min
    – Junior dash 2km – 20 min
