The Athens Marathon The Authentic is an annual marathon held in Athens, Greece. Inaugurated in 1972, the Athens Marathon is usually organized in early November (the second Sunday of November) and often serves as Greece’s National Marathon Championships. The race is open to about 40,000 runners who can participate in full marathons, 10K races, 5K races, and kids’ races.
The marathon race and course are inspired by the Ancient Greek legend of Pheidippides, a messenger who is said to have run from Marathon to Athens to bring news of the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon. Also taking inspiration from the tradition of the Olympic Torch, the race features the Marathon Flame, which is lit at the Tomb of the Battle of Marathon and carried to the stadium in Marathon before the beginning of each race.

Important Points
- The Hellenic Marathon Race Championship is also usually held during the Athens Marathon. The Authentic.
- There are two levels of registration available (depending on the services/facilities to be availed of):
- Advanced Registration Level
- Full Registration Level
- Runners who are not European Union Residents can only register in the Full Registration Level (refers to current residency and not nationality)
- Deferral of one’s entry to the next edition of “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” is not possible
- Corrections of the following are allowed (with/without fees/ penalty + Timelines applicable)
- Runners’ basic data
- Correcting/ Adding best finish time
- Placement in the same starting block as a co-athlete
- Change in T-shirt size
- Change in registration level
- Change in the distance of participation
- Runner replacement
- Change in starting block
- Cancellation
- In case a runner is unable to pick up their own bib number and race kit, they may appoint a representative to do so. The representative must present the following documents:
- photocopy of the runners’ ID or passport,
- copy of the email with the runner’s bib number, as well as
- For each of the races of the event, there is an upper/ maximum number of participants post which the registration will close for that race
- The runners of the event will be distributed in different starting blocks, each of which will have a capacity of approximately 1500 runners. Allocation of starting blocks based on runners’ personal best finish time submitted with entry form. Runners with no stated best finish time will be placed in one of the last three blocks.
- Aid stations (feed stations) are available along the route every 2.5km. Water, isotonic drink, and washroom are available at every aid station while Gels and medical staff are available at limited aid stations.
- After the finish, runners will be offered water, isotonic drinks, refreshments, bananas, and fitness bars.
- Time limits are applicable for the race
- Full marathon: 8 hrs
- 10K: 1 hr 30 min
- 5K: 1 hr
- Kids run: 20 min
