The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon is an annual marathon race held in Inverness, Scotland. Held at the beginning of October, the race event is held along the famous Loch Ness. The event includes a full marathon, 10K race, Corporate challenge, 5K fun run and Kids run Wee Nessi. Attracting over 8000 participants it is considered one of the most beautiful courses to run.

The Loch Ness Marathon supports several charities including Macmillan Cancer Support which is the lead charity partner.

Course records are held by Tomas Abyu (2:20:50) and Dinknesh Mekash Tefera (02:46:37).

Important Points

1. Reduced entry fees: All schools, youth clubs and disability groups are eligible to enter teams into the River Ness 5K and receive reduced entry fees.

2. Transferability of Registration:

  • Registration is transferable (to another person) but the transfer must be completed by pre set date. Refund (minus transfer fee) would be issued once the new runner has claimed the transfer and paid the full entry fee online. Please check terms & conditions for more information.
  • Registration to another race distance is possible subject to race capacity. Registration fees would need to be paid again and you need to register online until pre set date .

3. Elite Running spots: A limited number of free entries for elite runners are offered to those who have achieved the standards specified here within the 24 months prior to the race. Times must have been recorded in a licensed race with accredited course measurement. Please contact info@lochnessmarathon.com.

4. Bib/ race Pack collection: All marathon runners collecting their race pack must bring their photo ID. If participant is unable to attend Registration themselves, they can send someone on their behalf with photo ID of participant, photo ID of proxy along with signed letter of authorisation from participant.

5. Bus service to start line: All marathon runners are transported by bus to the marathon start from Inverness Ice Centre on Bught Drive, Inverness IV3 5SR. Buses depart from 07.30-07.50 and the journey takes around one hour. For those staying around Loch Ness, buses also pick up from a limited number of locations. Pre-booking is essential. Return transport is not provided to these specific locations after the race.

6. Buggies: Buggies are not allowed in the marathon or 10K but are welcome in the 5K and Wee Nessie.

7. Headphones: Wearing headphones or earphones is NOT permitted in any of the races under Scottish and UK Athletics rules. However headphones or earphones that use bone conductor technology are allowed.

8. Aid stations: There are 7 water stations along the marathon course and water is provided in 330ml recyclable plastic bottles. High5 Energy Gels would also be provided on marathon route on limited aid stations.

9. Toilets: Portable toilets are available at the start and at every water station along the marathon route. There are also available at the Event Village and the bus departure point.

10. Cut off limits: The Marathon starts at 10.00 and the race cut-off time is 7 hours (till 5pm). Roads along the final 3 miles in Inverness start to re-open from 4.30pm and finish line closes by 5pm.

11. Massage is available during registration on Saturday and after the race on Sunday at the Event Village.
