The San Francisco Marathon is a USATF-certified, Boston Marathon and Olympic Time Trials qualifying race. which is also partnered with the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AbbottWMM) Wanda Age Group World Ranking for Series XIII.
With 2 exceptions (1988 & 2020), the marathon has been held annually since 1977 in the city of San Francisco, California. The event offers a lot of choices for the runners – from an Ultra run, Marathon, 2 Half Marathons, a 10K, and a 5K. It has grown from 1000 runners (in 1977) to 27,500 runners (in 2017).
While the marathon is a popular event, the prize purse has varied over the years- from a t-shirt for the winner in the inaugural run in 1977 to $10000 for 1st position in 1998 to even zero prize awards – the San Francisco Marathon has seen it all. Since the prize purse is dependent on the sponsors, there have been no prizes awarded since 2005 due to a lack of large sponsors.
The marathon usually starts and finishes on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building and crosses the Golden Gate Bridge.

Marathon: The top 3 overall and the top 3 Men, Women, and NB+ division winners in the Full marathon will receive 3D animated awards via email when the results are finalized.
1st Half Marathon/ 2nd Half Marathon: The top 3 overall and the top 3 Men, Women, and NB+ division winners in the 1st Half Marathon & 2nd Half Marathon will receive 3D animated awards via email when the results are finalized.
10K: Gifts will be issued to the top 3 Men, Women, and NB+ in the 10K open division. 3D animated awards will be emailed when the results are finalized

Important Points
- Water, energy drinks, and other refreshments would be available on the route/course. Water and refreshments would be available to all runners post-race finish.
- Medical and washroom facilities would also be available on the route/course as well as at the start point and finish line of the race.
- Pacers would be available.
- Elite/ Sub Seed Athletes: Runners can apply for the elite or sub-seed athlete category in the San Francisco Marathon. More information about Elite & sub-seed can be found here.

- Time limits are applicable for all the races after which the course would be open for regular vehicular traffic.
- Marathon: 6 hrs (course closes by 12:00 pm)
- First Half marathon: 3 hrs

- 10K: 1 hrs 30 min
- 5K fun run: 1 hrs
- 5K run: 1 hrs
